Stacy hustled into the kitchen to pick up the plate of wedding cake. Ron and Charlie were there talking about car maintenance as usual. The cake was rumored to be simply amazing, as it was made by a friend of the bride to an exacting recipe. Stacy looked forward to a piece, but first she was going to do her duty and offer it to the guests.
“Mind if I have a piece?” said Ron. He took one and then so did Charlie. Stacy exited the house after three or four others had taken slices. People really liked the cake, and also they were chatty and full of compliments about her bridesmaids' dress.
Soon she stood outside under the white shade structure. People were really grabbing their share. Suddenly only one piece remained and Stacy was about to eat it herself, but then a hand reached out—it was Ron again. “Great cake!” he said, “Mind if I have another piece?”
And then there was none.
