Clouds darken the afternoon light, contrasting against raindrops and tail lights smeared through the windscreen. A weather satellite connection shows tornado activity somewhere around here.
Storm chasers chasing storms. Driving on highway 360 southbound. Look over there now on the horizon! A big weather system. A twister forming, bulging out of the rotating cloud base.
Fields here are delineated by tree lines and barns, while over there stands the one house in a storm.
Doing a U-turn to get closer, and stay in the safe zone. Storm chasers drive down this bleak road, some pulling over to snap photographs or to hurriedly set up a portable weather station.
There it is—the snaking spiraling vortex descending like a piece of string touching down on fields and uprooting trees. People shouting say it's going to cross the road. Another U-turn and vans race off for a safe distance to get photos.
The twister's dark angry base now tears up earth and circles detritus as it closes in, framed by the light, dangerous and photogenic together with the one house in a storm.
