Urban Jungle

Concrete built on top of concrete
Chain link fences
Poverty
Everyday survival in this urban jungle
Inner city shelters
Someone pushing a shopping cart
Or selling heroin on the street corner
Deals in the alley behind the liquor store

Cop cars siren by
But they don't stop here

Can I get a cigarette?
Sure.
Do you have a lighter?
Says the girl with heavy eye-liner
Tight pink leggings
And fake fur

Music pounding the streets
Moves on by with shiny wheels spinning

Helping hands at the soup kitchen
Do you care?
The EMTs were called out three times
To the same shabby apartment building
And that's just today

Pop pop!
Hope that's a motorbike back firing
Then again

People waiting at the bus stop
An angry lady gesticulates at parked cars
Can you make your rent this month?

Concrete jungle mixing people
Built of people, places, emotions
Sweet words for your loved one

Hey fucker don't bring your weapon into our house
We have children here
We say prayers over re-heated pizza slices
The Lord will provide

Meanwhile other things happen
